What is Coupler AI Agent?

Coupler AI Agent is your pocket data analyst that helps you work with your data sets through natural conversation. Instead of manually querying data or navigating through multiple screens, you can simply ask the agent questions in plain English and get immediate answers, insights, and analysis.

Think of it as having a data analyst available 24/7 who knows all your data, can run queries instantly, and provides recommendations based on your actual business data.

Key capabilities:

  • Query data from your existing data sets conversationally
  • Get insights and recommendations based on your data
  • Find and recommend templates that match your needs
  • Analyze trends, compare periods, and identify patterns
  • Run data flows on your behalf

The Coupler AI Agent is currently available to beta users and works with all data sets in your Coupler account.

Where to Access the Coupler AI Agent

The AI Agent is available in three locations within Coupler.io, giving you flexible access depending on your workflow:

Global Agent (Left Sidebar)

In the Analyze with AI section of the left sidebar, find the AI Agent icon to open the global agent. This agent:

  • Has access to all data sets in your account
  • Can recommend templates based on your needs
  • Remembers your conversation history within this chat
  • Is ideal for exploring multiple data sets or getting template recommendations
AI Agent is available from the left sidebar

Data Flow Agent (Data Flow List)

When viewing your data flows list, you'll see an Ask AI icon next to some data flows. This agent:

  • Focuses exclusively on that specific data flow
  • Has its own separate conversation memory
Use Ask AI button to access Coupler AI Agent

Data Flow Agent (Setup Wizard)

When creating or editing a data flow in the wizard, the AI Agent is available in the top navigation bar. It is also the tab you will see when you open a data flow.

This agent:

  • Works with the current data flow you're configuring
  • Helps you understand and work with your data flow during setup

Important: The sidebar agent and data flow agents have separate conversation memories. Your chat with the global agent won't carry over to specific data flow agents and vice versa.

What the AI Agent Can Do

The Coupler AI Agent provides several powerful capabilities to help you work with your data:

All Coupler AI Agents can:

Query your data - Ask questions about data in your existing data flows and get immediate answers. The agent can filter, aggregate, and analyze your data using SQL queries behind the scenes.

Provide insights and recommendations - Get analysis, spot trends, compare time periods, and receive actionable recommendations based on your actual business data.

View data flow metadata - Check when your data flows last ran successfully, how many rows were processed, and other technical details.

Run data flows - Trigger data flow runs on your behalf, even for newly created flows that don't have destinations configured yet.

Global Agent (Sidebar) Only:

Recommend templates - Describe what you need ("I want to track my Facebook and Google Ads performance") and get template recommendations that match your use case.

List available data sets - See all data sets available in your account.

Notes:

  • To query data or get insights, your data flow must have at least one successful run completed
  • You can run newly created data flows even without destinations configured
  • The agent works with all data flows available to you

Common Use Cases

The Coupler AI Agent helps with various business scenarios across different departments. Here are some real examples of how users interact with the agent:

Marketing Analysis

Analyze customer acquisition costs: "What's our overall customer acquisition cost across all paid channels this quarter compared to last quarter? I need this for the board meeting".

Review marketing ROI: "Show me the ROI breakdown by marketing channel for the past 6 months. I need to reallocate our annual budget".

Identify high-performing campaigns: "Which campaigns are contributing most to our pipeline revenue? I want to double down on what's working".

Sales Performance

Review sales pipeline: "Can you pull the sales pipeline report for this month? I need to see how many deals are in each stage and the total value at each stage".

Analyze conversion rates: "What are our conversion rates from lead to opportunity and from opportunity to closed-won for the last quarter? How do they compare to our targets?".

Forecast revenue: "How many deals are expected to close this month based on their probability scores? What's our forecasted revenue vs our monthly target?".

Financial Reporting

Compare quarterly profits: "Check the profit for this quarter, compare it to last quarter, and provide a breakdown by department".

Generate cash flow reports: "Could you provide a cash flow report for the last 30 days, including all incoming and outgoing transactions?".

Review accounts receivable: "Share the current accounts receivable status and tell me how many overdue invoices we have and which customers owe the most".

The Coupler AI Agent understands natural, conversational questions and translates them into data queries automatically.

Getting Started with the Coupler AI Agent

Starting a conversation with the AI Agent is straightforward:

Opening the Agent

From the sidebar: Click the AI Agent icon in the left sidebar to open the global agent.

From data flow list: Click the Ask AI icon next to a data flow in your data flows list.

From the wizard: Access the agent while creating or editing a data flow through the setup wizard.

Your First Interaction

When you open the agent, you'll see a chat interface where you can type your questions or requests in plain English. There are also quick conversation starters available if you are not sure what to ask first. The agent will:

  1. Understand your request.
  2. Determine what data it needs to access.
  3. Execute the necessary queries or actions.
  4. Provide you with results and insights.

Typical Interaction Pattern

Start with a question or request → Agent analyzes and retrieves data → You review the results → Ask follow-up questions to dig deeper

You can have natural back-and-forth conversations. For example:

  • First: "Show me our top 5 campaigns by revenue this month".
  • Follow-up: "What was the cost per conversion for each?"
  • Follow-up: "Compare these to last month's performance".

The agent remembers the context of your conversation, so you don't need to repeat information in follow-up questions.

Understanding What the Coupler AI Agent Does

The Coupler AI Agent operates transparently, so you can see exactly how it's working with your data.

Visible Tool Calls

As the agent works, you'll see the tools it's using to accomplish your request. The agent uses Coupler.io's Model Context Protocol (MCP) server as its backbone, which provides access to your data sets and their data.

You'll see notifications when the agent:

  • Lists available data flows
  • Retrieves data flow metadata
  • Queries your data
  • Runs a data flow
  • Or uses any other tool

SQL Query Visibility

When the agent queries your data, it shows you the actual SQL queries it's running. This transparency helps you:

  • Understand what data is being retrieved
  • Verify that the agent is querying the right information
  • Learn how to structure data queries yourself in case you are interested in SQL
  • Trust the results you're receiving

How the Agent Works

Behind the scenes, the agent:

  1. Analyzes your natural language request
  2. Determines which data sets and data it needs to access
  3. Fetches the schema (column names and types) as well as 5-20 rows of data
  4. Constructs and executes SQL queries against your data
  5. Processes the results
  6. Presents insights and recommendations in conversational language

Tips for Better Results

Get the most out of Coupler AI Agent with these practical tips:

Be Specific with Time Periods

By default, the Coupler AI agent will only take the last 30 days of data. So if you are interested in working with longer time periods, instead of: "Show me our sales data" try: "Show me our sales data for Q3 2024 compared to Q2 2024"

Specific time ranges help the agent retrieve exactly the data you need and provide more meaningful comparisons.

Reference Specific Data Sets

Mention which data set you want to query: "From my Google Ads performance data sets, what was our average CPC last month?"

Ask Follow-Up Questions

Don't start a new conversation for every question. The agent remembers your context:

  • "Break that down by channel"
  • "What about the previous quarter?"
  • "Show me only campaigns with spend over $1000"

Ask one thing at a time to make it easier for the agent to structure its answer.

Use Natural, Conversational Language

You don't need to write like you're querying a database. The agent understands:

  • "Which campaigns performed best?"
  • "Why did our conversion rate drop?"
  • "Compare this month to our average"

Provide Context for Better Recommendations

When asking for insights, explain what you're trying to accomplish: "I need to cut 20% from our marketing budget. Which channels have the worst ROI?"

This helps the agent tailor its recommendations to your specific business needs.
