Troubleshooting: OAUTH_APPROVAL_ERROR_GENERIC error
Salesforce introduced changes related to Connected App Usage Restrictions. Learn more.
As a result, when trying to connect your Salesforce account to Coupler.io, you may see the following error:
OAuth error. For more information, contact your Salesforce administrator.
OAUTH_APPROVAL_ERROR_GENERIC: An unexpected error has occurred during authentication. Please try again.
This happens because Salesforce now requires Connected Apps to be explicitly installed or approved by an admin before users can authorize them.
How to fix it for regular users?
If you see this error:
- Contact your Salesforce administrator.
- Ask the admin to install Coupler connected app in Salesforce.
- Once the app is installed, you can retry connecting Coupler, and the OAuth flow should complete successfully.
How admins can fix this issue?
Admins can fix this by installing or approving the Coupler app:
- Go to Setup → Apps → App Manager.
- Locate Coupler in the list.
- Click Install or Manage to approve the app for users.
What if the admin also sees the same OAuth error?
If the admin cannot install or approve the app, most likely their account does not have a full System Administrator profile. See details
To fix this, verify that the admin has one of the following:
1. System Administrator standard profile
OR
2. Specific permissions:
- If API Access Control is enabled: the admin must have Use Any API Client permission to access uninstalled apps.
- If API Access Control is not enabled: the admin must have Approve Uninstalled Connected Apps permission (introduced in Salesforce Summer ’25). This allows trusted users to self-authorize and use uninstalled connected apps.
Once the admin has the required profile or permissions, they can install/approve the Coupler app, and regular users will be able to connect without issues.
