Troubleshooting: Something went wrong; You do not have permissions to open this file in the browser.

Issue description

In Microsoft Excel source or destination, you might get an error "Something went wrong; You do not have permissions to open this file in the browser.":

The same issue has been reported by other Microsoft Excel API users as well (example), indicating that this is an error on Microsoft's side. Our team at Coupler has also contacted their support team, but we have not yet received a response. It may be worth visiting the linked community post above and adding your vote to it as well to get more attention from the Microsoft team:

In the meantime, some of our users have successfully resolved the issue by following the approaches listed below. However, others continue to experience the problem despite these efforts. We are still awaiting a resolution in collaboration with the Microsoft team.

Possible Solutions

  • Via Incognito Browser
    1. Delete your current importer and Microsoft connections (https://app.coupler.io/app/connections). If you're having this error when selecting Microsoft Excel as a source, then you must delete the source connection:
But if you have this error when selecting Microsoft Excel as a destination, then you must also delete the corresponding connection:
    2. Open an incognito window and make sure to allow third-party cookies:
    3. Set up your new Coupler importer using fresh Microsoft Excel credentials
  • Via a different device
Try using a different device where you only have 1 or no other Microsoft accounts signed in.
  • Make sure that you are logged in to the same account you're using in the Coupler connection and Microsoft Excel
In case you are using account A for connection, but in another tab, you are logged in to Microsoft 365 with account B, the file picker will be opened with account B and there will be files that are not accessible for the account A used in connection.

    1. Open your Microsoft 365 account in your browser. Log out from it and make sure no other accounts are logged in.
    2. Connect your Microsoft account source in Coupler.io.
2.1. open source connections page https://app.coupler.io/app/connections
2.2 click "disconnect" near your Microsoft Excel connection
    3. Set up a fresh importer in Coupler.io, and connect to your needed MS Account afresh
    4. Select your needed source file afresh
